Italian government to detain illegal migrants for up to 18 months

Following the arrival of over 10000 migrants at the southern Italian city of Lampedusa last week, the government on the need to curb the continues flow of migrant from countries mostly around the Northern part of Africa and some Asian countries.

The government complained how the European Union has failed in assisting financially on the case of illegal migrants and therefore left Italy to carry all responsibilities since it’s the entry point of most of the migrants to Europe.

Though Lampedusa is carrying the headlines now, Italy as a whole has been going through illegal migrants crises for decades and this has affected the economy of the country. While in Italy, the migrants will apply for asylum but before it’ll be processed, it takes months and the Italian government keeps them in detention camp awaiting the outcome of the asylum applications.

It’s on this note that the government, on Monday 18th of September come up with a policy to increase the number of months it takes to decide on asylum applications up to 18 months. This means illegal migrants will have to be in detention for this long before knowing their fates.

Adding to the lengthening of the application period, the government also plan to repatriate some of them without global travel protection so as to reduce the number of migrants they have to care for financially.
